Bo Trek - Lightning Strike - City Lights

Lightning striking the skies above the city lights.  As you can see there is a condensation trail or more of a  light trail  from a jet airliner, thought I would make this more interesting and finish off the line. This Lightning Photography image was scanned from film.  I am bringing this back from the dead.  Not really happy with the Nikon cool scan so here is my black and white with a brown texture dirty version. about a 45 sec exposure.

Fall Colors

Boulder County, CO. Beautiful autumn colors with the chapel on the rock. The founder of Camp St. Malo, Monsignor Joseph Bosetti, had for years entertained an idea that one day he would build a chapel on this site. In 1916 he and two friends observed a falling meteor during the night and in his search for the remnants the next morning, he came across a large rock. The beauty of the land inspired the priest and he remembered Jesus’ words to Peter: “Upon this rock, I will build my Church.” (Matt 16:18). Vowing one day to build a chapel here, Msgr. Bosetti prayed for nearly 20 years to acquire the funds. The chapel was completed in 1935. In 1993, Pope John Paul II visited the chapel during his trip to Denver for the World Youth Day and bestowed his personal blessing on the chapel. Colorful photography image. 1,500 lightning strikes ignite 81 fires, Cal Fire says
http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/story/2179879.html
Published: Sunday, Sep. 13, 2009 - 12:19 pm
The state Department of Fire and Forestry Protection said more than 1,500 lightning in northern and central California since Saturday ignited 81 fires - but state firefighters have contained nearly all of them.
It expects more fires because of the lack of rain and likely additional lightining strikes.
Daniel Berlant, spokesman, said the agency's Santa Clara unit is fighting 20 fires covering 200 acres that are 35 percent contained. The fires' progress has been stopped.
The agency's Tuolumne-Calaveras unit has fully contained the 200 acre Telegraph Fire near Cooperopolis and a 5-acre fire near Arnold.

Cute Happy Hounds

When there is no lightning to chase... sometimes I like to chase dogs... and sometimes they chase me.

Here is a short Video I put together of my photoshoot with Happy Hounds. The dogs were so much fun. I was soaked when I left there cause I got licked from head to toe. What a great place to board your pup or do doggie day care. They even have a self serve dog wash. TOO COOL! Brian and Olivia do an incredible job in creating a happy fun enviroment for the animals. The dog suites are like mini hotel rooms. It was really fun to watch the dogs having fun with other dogs and just being dogs. Olivia is a certified dog trainer too. Pretty cool place. Check out their web site and you will see what I am talking about: http://www.happyhoundscolorado.com/

But before you do that please check out these image of the adorable cute dogs. Comments welcome!

If you are thinking about a portrait of your dog, please keep me in mind. Imagine one of these above your fireplace. You know... we only have so much time with our pups. And when they are gone, a portrait brings back all the happy memories ever time you look at it. Please visit my web site at http://www.Striking-Photography.com I also do children portraits, senior portraits and family portraits. Most portraits are shot on location. No extra charge for nights and weekends. I also do some fun effects with the images at no extra charge. My FOCUS is on you! Smoky Sunset

Sept 1st, 2009. Smoke in the atmosphere from the wildfires in California and other parts of the West and Canada is affecting the skies above Colorado. The haze is coming from fires near Los Angeles, about 800 miles away from Denver, as well as blazes in Yosemite National Park, Utah's Pine Valley wilderness area, and Canada. The massive Station Fire near L.A. has scorched 164 square miles of brush as of today.

More Lightning Storm Images

These are from Boulder County Lightning Storm 08.05.09

Lightning kills more people on an annual basis than tornadoes, hurricanes or winter storms. It is second only to flash floods in the annual number of deaths caused by storm-related hazards.
Damage costs from lightning are estimated at $4-5 billion each year in the U.S.
Around the earth there are 100 lightning strikes per second, or 8,640,00 times a day.
What is commonly referred to as heat lightning, is actually lightning too far away to be heard. However, the storm may be moving in your direction.
There are approximately 100,000 thunderstorms in the U.S. each year.

Lightning Storm 08.05.09 Thanks DAD!

Wednesday August 5th 8:30pm. WOW what an incredible night. Lightning started hitting south of the Boulder County Fairgrounds where the County fair is going on. So now I get this amazing image in my head of the Lights from the rides and Lightning bolts in the background. By the time I get there it stops hitting. So I started photographing the County fair. And then I get another image in my head the full moon with one of the rides. And when I get it lined up the clouds cover the moon never to be seen again. Bummer!

Then it happened. It started hitting the front range... it may have even hit Meeker and Longs Peak. Something I have never seen since I have been shooting here. It was tough getting out of there and to a good location. So I bee lined it to Airport road. Had to act quick. My first spot was at Silver Creek high school just to try and get a shot of the peaks. But this location was not good enough... so I went to my old stand by at McIntosh Lake. Time was of the essence. It was really smacking the front range pretty good. Probably the best I have seen here in Colorado hitting the front range maybe even the divide. It was really hard to tell. But at my spot, I was shooting toward the twin peaks trying to get my dream shot I have been working on. Some really amazing bolts. Some of the best yet this year. I will let you be the judge. It was tough holding it together because of being excited and trying to get set up before it goes away.

And I have to tell you this years storms have been incredible, and for me I some how I believe it is my father up above helping me out. And I have felt that way all summer long while chasing storms. And everytime I would nail one I would say " Thanks Dad!" And tonight was definitely the best I have seen.

And tonight... is one year to the day my father passed away.... Thanks DAD!

Lightning Storm 07.28.09

It's Tuesday July 28th, 2009. Stormy thunderhead clouds in the afternoon air. Will this be the day? Left the house a little after 8:00pm. Went to my spot by the lake. Not really a sunset tonight. And then for the first time it started hitting just southeast of Mt Meeker in the foothills over the first ridge. You could not get a clear shot of it though.

Thought this could be the day I get the shot I have been working on. This is my 2nd year trying to get my dream shot. Trying to get the twin peaks with some great Lightning action. It WILL happen even if takes me ten years ;-). So I took off for one of my other spots closest the the peaks. Hoping it would go north an start hitting in front of the peaks, but it went out east. It seem to always be behind a ridge or would not come out of the clouds. So I did a loop to 36 and then down Nelson road to another shot. First I shot south east. Then went further down to antenna mountain but it was not hitting in the right place. So I headed south on 59th ave hoping for an image I now have in my mind of a great shot over looking Boulder Res. But no such luck. The storm cell is starting to head out east and getting out of my range. Shot for a little while but it was all clouds to cloud and just over the ridge. I only saw bolts hit the ground a few times. Got stuck in the rain a couple times and did not come up with worthy Image. Over all it was a GREAT Chase, did not get the Shot I wanted but it is always exciting.
